❖
Going to the park with Logan had been a colossal mistake. After they finished their coffees and talking about their families and their jobs and their pasts, Connor finally glanced at her watch. The sun was already long since up, and somehow, she was late for her shift. She’d never been late for one. She ran the five blocks to the station, her chest heaving as she threw open the bay door.
“What the hell happened to you?” Jake asked.
“Everything okay? Did I miss a call?”
“You’re fine. Take a load off. I covered for you with the captain.”
Connor exhaled and sat on the back of the rig. “Good.”
“Overslept?”
“Hardly. I was up before the sun was even…Never mind.” Connor didn’t want to explain to Jake where she’d been or who she’d been with.
“So then what…” Jake’s eyes brightened. “You were with her, weren’t you?!”
No point in lying. Jake always had a way of getting to the bottom of everything anyway. Besides, Connor was tired. She didn’t want to lie to him anymore than she wanted to lie to herself.
“Yeah. I ran into her at Pavement when I was getting coffee.” Connor flushed when she remembered the way Logan looked in her running shorts that showed off her hard, muscled legs.
“That’s it?”
“Then she took me to the park by the university and showed me this great spot that overlooks the whole city.”
“The big bad player has a romantic side, huh?”
Connor smiled. It was romantic, but not because of the view or the time of day. Logan hadn’t planned any of it. And Connor bet she was one of the few to have shared that with her.
Jake continued to stare at her, obviously waiting. “And then what?”
“What do you mean, ‘and then what’?”
“You’re twenty minutes late, which for you might as well be twenty hours late, and all you can tell me is that you were sitting on a park bench somewhere watching the sun rise?”
“Pretty much.” Connor stood up and Jake chased her.
“Are you going out with her now? Did you at least kiss her? Come on. You’re such a prude!”
The overhead tone drowned out the rest of Jake’s pleas, and Connor turned to him with a satisfied smirk. She put her hand dramatically to her ear. “What’s that? Sorry, Jake. I can’t hear you. We’ve got a call. Let’s go.”
She jumped into the passenger seat of the truck and Jake followed, grumbling.
“Medic 884 respond to 49 Coulter Street for a bravo nine nine. Forty-three-year-old male, possible overdose. Over.”
Jake had already pulled out of the station by the time Connor picked up the mic.
“884 responding to 49 Coulter Street. Over.”
“884, be advised no PD on scene. We have an officer on his way, and right now the patient is under control, but if the scene escalates, get out of there. Over.”
“Copy that. We’ll be fine. Over.”
Jake pulled up outside an old building with weather-beaten shutters falling off the windows and yellowing paint chipping away from the siding. They knew this neighborhood. It was notoriously bad, with reports of drug deals gone wrong nearly every month.
